James 3:13-18 – 7/27/2026

Christianity is a religion of peace. That which is just (also translated as “righteous”) is also peaceful and brought about through peaceful means. War is antithetical to the commands of Jesus and the reign of God. It amazes me that there are Christians who believe that God blesses and commands war. It amazes me that it is taught that the commands to love are consistent with God showing favoritism to one nation over another through their acts of violence.

Some lessons in Scripture are complex, raising as many questions as they attempt to answer or admitting of a multitude of legitimate interpretations. This is not the case with James’ connection between justice and peace. What is right tends toward peace, and war is the enemy of justice. As followers of Jesus who commanded us to love above all else, the right way of living and the best ordering of society are found in peace, not war. Bodily integrity and safety are necessary for living well, and the only context where we can love effectively is one that is not marred by the violence of war.
